Mythbusters Imploding Tanker Car

Hard to believe this is the last year for Mythbusters. 🙁 Check out Mythbusters Imploding a Tanker Car. Turns out the structure is very strong as can be expected. But with a small dent in the structure it squashes like a piece of ripe fruit. We can see the same type of implosion on oil drums.

I was always perplexed by cases where they fail to confirm a myth, make a change that still remains within the realm of possible, succeed to reproduce the result, then promptly declare the myth “busted” – hold on, didn’t you just show that it could happen in slightly exotic circumstances? Should it not be at least “plausible”?!? They admit it themselves on the show – the tanker didn’t _have_ to be dinged by a concrete block, it might just have been particularly rusted or it might have had some structural weakness that never mattered before that… But yeah, it’s a shame they’re ending the show.

    Hey Max,

Yea I think this one should have been plausible. I am thinking even different models of the tankers would have different thicknesses and other weaknesses that the ones they tested don’t have. That being said in real life I don’t think it would happen since just like hot water tanks, the tankers have pressure relief valves. But like everything safety vales go bad and people make stupid mistakes.
