DIY Water Level Sensor Build


Bob Johnson completed his DIY Water Level Sensor project. It can sense 4 levels of water, the results are transmitted using some Xbee devices. 

“The distance from my barn to the house is over 700ft. I used a 2.4Ghz yagi to send the signal to the house. This works great and no outside antenna is required at the receiving end. I have tried this setup at much smaller distances, and no yagi or directional antenna was required.

This setup has worked well for me. I use it to monitor my horses water trough. By eliminating the need for a micro-controller on the transmitting end and placing the Xbee in sleep mode, I have been able to run this setup for 10 months now on the same 3 AA batteries with the Xbee set in high power mode. “

When your RC plane flies  out of transmitter range some of them are setup to start a slow bank so that it hopefully flies closer to you and you can reacquire communication. What if that fails and the plane comes crashing back to earth? This Lost Signal RC Alarm & Lost Plane Finder project will help you in this case. When your transmitter is not connected the buzzer will sound so you can find it a bit easier. Construction is a nice and compact point to point solder construction which means no PCB is needed.

If you are looking to build a new project, this DIY AC Watt Meter would make for a useful device that can be added to your test bench.

“The microcontroller of the wattmeter is PIC18F252. Basically it reads the voltage and the current and calculates the RMS voltage, the RMS current and the average power. Then it interfaces with the LCD and shows all these values. It has a hardware SPI module which lets communicating with the MCP3202 ADCs. On the other hand it interfaces to the LCD over 4-bit or 8-bit interface.  The microcontroller’s master clock becomes 5Mhz when 20Mhz crystal oscillator is used. There is an onboard ICSP connector (J3) which is used to program the PIC.”

Apple Lightning Connector Hacked


Apple keeps lots of design details secret. You can see some of the previous charging mysteries revealed here. The current Apple devices use the new Lightning Connector. The details behind this connector was unknown until recently.  Here is some info on the chip that is inside. Ramtin Amin has recently taken reverse engineering to the next level by first making a breakout board. It was made to inspect the main WLCSP chip which has 36 BGAs spaced at 0.35mm. The board needed to be a 4 layer PCB with laser drilled blind vias! There is a lot more to be explored but we are a lot closer to knowing the secrets now.

If you want your valentine to work for their candy hearts why not build them a slot machine to let them win them. I have seen little bits before but this is the most complex device I have seen built!
