 Robotic Laundry Folding Machine -03

We have machines that wash and dry our clothes. I am still surprised that there aren’t more wash and dry combo units available since it would save so much space and eliminate one machine from the house. Folding is still one of those tasks that needs to be done by hand. This might be a thing of the past though! The FoldiMate is a Robotic Laundry Folding Machine that could change this. It is still in the prototype stage and will initially be targeted at laundromats and other places that have a need for large volumes of folding but like most good ideas, we will see them in the consumer side as soon as they have been perfected and made inexpensive enough for households to afford.

I actually researched the combo washer/dryers — apparently the main problems are:
    * drying needs more space for the same load (since dry clothes expand)
    * manufacturers think that the main application for these combo units is not convenience, but ability to place them somewhere other than dedicated laundry rooms/closets. Because of this, they [almost?] always feature ventless drying — which most people don’t like because it leaves clothes slightly damp.

I feel that wash and dry combo units are as bad as printer/scanner combos.

When one part has failed, you trash the whole thing.

I would not relegate laundry folding to a robot just yet: it’s the only time I ever look at my clothes to see if they’re still not riddled with (too many) holes 🙂 Besides, there are not too many things in the laundry basket that I would care about the way they are folded or whether they are folded or not. It sounds to me that out of all the mundane home tasks to automate folding clothes will probably be the last…

Has anyone seen the folding machine? Is it out yet? I own laundromats and would love a machine to reduce my labor costs.
