DIY Acrylic Enclosure Building Techniques

at 1:43 am. Filed under DIY Hacks

Michael Colombo from Make wrote a guide that goes through the steps Michael uses to build acrylic enclosures. When you are finished a project you may be lucky enough to make it fit into a mint tin but for those other ones that need something a bit more custom why not make an enclosure that is just as hand made as the electronics inside.

“When building your own creations, itโ€™s sometimes necessary to bend the acrylic sheets themselves in order to serve your vision. This can be easily done using little more than scrap wood, a Dremel, circular saw, heat gun, and a vise.”

Why is everybody posting this? The plastic-forming methods and results shown in the video are terrible. This should be considered a what-not-to-do video.

I’m not sure why he is using Dremel to cut the acrylic sheet? There’s a scribing tool that does the job so much nicer (almost no shavings compared to Deremel cutoff!) and so much quicker. Rest it against a metal ruler, give the sheet 3-4 deep scratches to make a groove along the separation line and just break it off at the groove. Takes less than a minute, would not even need to fast-forward the video ๐Ÿ™‚

    Terrible video. Shows nothing.
