DIY Spot Welder

Using a transformer for an old audio amp and a case made from an old computer power supply sure does make for a good looking DIY spot welder. It also has some smarts built in to detect when the welding electrode has been lowered to allow for a slight delay before the welding power is turned on. A pot is adjusted to change the actual weld time so you can get it dialed in and produce consistent welds. Manekinen says that it can weld 2 x 0.75 mm sheets with no issues. A BT138 triac is used to switch the power and seems to be holding up but Manekinen would recommend using something a bit beefier if you decide to give the build a try.

    Cool project!

Anyone tried to use a spot welder like that to weld solderable metal tabs to LiIon battery cells? I mean, without blowing up themselves :) Seems like a smaller setup like this might work but I’ve no idea how to do it safely, especially for the positive terminal (the one that’s isolated from the body).

So what happens if the arm is lifted before the power is off? The shock of your life?

I love the human spirit! “No I don’t have a spot welder, but I can make one!”

    Great project!

@Welding Supplies: No, such spot welders operate at 3-4VAC. Note how the transformer secondary has only 4 turns. So if the primary winding had ~120 turns he would get out ~4V.
