Andy Rawson built an open hardware Thermal Imaging Device for use with Smart Phones (the code and details will be posted soon I am assuming). We have seen the commercial version of these Thermal Imaging Cameras used on home renovation shows to pinpoint insulation issues. As Andy mentions these cameras are much more than the average home owner could afford to spend to learn where his house is lacking insulation. For $150 I can see many home owners purchasing one to see where their insulation could be improved. |

Awesome!
Holding my breath waiting for the open sourced project to come up.
I have been trying to make one using isolated PIR detector array, but so far the result is dismal.

Id like to see the guts of this project. I wonder if it uses one of those IR field sensors i once found from panasonic or someone. They are basically 16×16 thermal cameras in a metal can with a I2C interface. Couldn’t find a place that actually sells them tho

It looks like he’s using the MLX90620 from Melexis. You can buy some on Digikey. They have the Panasonic 8×8 arrays too. Really awesome little devices.

This is great! I’ve wanted a thermal cam to play around with
But what (if anything) can be done to improve the resolution of these sensors?
idea 1: install several arrays and add lenses to re-focus the sensing area. From what I understand these would have to be silicon or germanium — pretty expensive and probably hard to align properly
idea 2: interlace several arrays and add some software processing to interpolate the inbetween values (not sure if that’s doable)
