DIY Animated LED Christmas Display

at 11:51 pm. Filed under DIY Hacks, Electronic Hacks

This DIY Animated LED Christmas Display is sure to get you in the spirit of Christmas. The sign is built from 134 different colored LEDs, to make this happen some 74HC595 and 74HC14 chips are used. The sign is built to permanently display one message. I am thinking a great upgrade to this project would be to build it with LED matrix boards so it could be used to display other messages in the future.

I think Embedded Lab should be applauded for going the other way: everybody turns their “last years'” projects from logic ICs to micros and they’ve converted a PIC based one to logic ICs. Brilliant! We need more projects like that (seriously) because this day and age everyone has heaps of old logic ICs that do nothing and just occupy space. I don’t have a heart to just throw them out, I would rather build something that blinks out of them. Great job!

I totally agree with you, Fuming Solder. It’s nice to see someone tackle a task without using a micro. While doing everything with a micro of course speeds up development, they are often used in cases where they are completely overkill. Especially in cases where the software is not that complicated and where it doesn’t have to be updated, this is definitely the way one should go. In many cases, even relatively old logic ICs should consume a little less power.
