3d iPad – no glasses needed

at 10:02 am. Filed under Cool Gadgets, Insane Equipment

This 3d iPad Demo is future of portable media! Laurence Nigay, a professor from France was inspired by the 3D work done by Johnny Lee who we interviewed a few years ago (blogs here and now works for the Google).

“We track the head of the user with the front facing camera in order to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction.
It does not use the accelerometers and relies only on the front camera. “

Nicely DONE ! Can I have one ?

This is interesting, but is not in any way 3D. Both eyes see the same image, there is no perception of depth in any natural sense. If you look at something in real life with your eyes and you and the subject are not moving, you can still perceive the depth because of each eye seeing a slightly different perspective.

This is neat, but ALL it is is head tracking, not 3D. In a true immersive virtualization system, you typically use head tracking, yes, but polarized or shutter glasses are also used to reveal different images to each eye.

Yes, as Andrew mentioned it is not 3D but an interesting trick.

    Amazing, absaloutly fantastic.

Really great work and you should keep at it.

A great way to upgrade existing video call devices to enable 3d interfaces

Could this be applied to a Video phone with less power than an ipad??

    It is a 3d!
If that isn’t 3d what is then Quake 1 to 4, Half-life, Call of Duty, … Last time I checked that are 3d shooters.
And why the hell i brught new “3D grafic card” from nVidia if i cant see 3d with it.
    What was “Diamond monster 2”?
A “3d accelerator”, it was build out of three “voodoo 2” chips and supported SLI 🙂

Well, when you say “no-glasses” 3D you’ve got to mean 3D image, not 3D environment rendered on a 2D monitor, which is what games like Quake are.

I think what they meant by no glasses was taking what Johnny Lee did, and doing it with out the glasses found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw

It is 3D ,user with the front facing camera, show the more functions to us .the front camera puts we and our friend face-to-face.

  11. Says:

Yeah, this is 3D projected onto a 2D surface, which has never required glasses. It just responds to your motions, which has already been done. I don’t know why they’re calling it real 3D – the image doesn’t extend out of the screen, that requires feeding a different image to each eye.
