3 Phase Rectifier Basics

If you are making a Hard Drive Wind Generator you will need to wire up a bunch of coils. This tutorial video from The Geek Group goes over some 3 Phase Rectifier Basics. See this page for more details.

“For three-phase AC, six diodes are used. Typically there are three pairs of diodes, each pair, though, is not the same kind of double diode that would be used for a full wave single-phase rectifier. Instead the pairs are in series (anode to cathode). Typically, commercially available double diodes have four terminals so the user can configure them as single-phase split supply use, for half a bridge, or for three-phase use.”

    Does any one else reconize this circuit? it’s the same thing out of an automobile alternator.

    I’d add a decent capacitor to smooth out the dc. Otherwise, it’s a good way to trash a perfectly good DC circuit.

    Ive been trying to figure something of that sort myself. what if we had a cable from the common point of the windings? would it work with just 3 diodes? it would halve the voltage drop and also eliminate the coil resistance.

    Using only 3 diodes will work but you would need a larger cap to smooth it out. It would be the 3 phase equivalent of a half-wave rectifier.

    There would still be some resistance with the center tap; one winding instead of two (1.7?).

    Also, with a lower voltage, getting the same amount of power requires an increase in current.
