We normally see snakebots swimming in pools and they can climb inside pipes but check out how well this CMU Snakebots can Climb Trees, it is a creation from the Biorobotics Lab at Carnegie Mellon University. Via: Botjunkie “From the Biorobotics Lab at Carnegie Mellon University, a snake robot (Snakebot) demonstrates how it can climb a tree and look around. Please keep in mind that this robot climbed a specific tree with a specific trunk width about 1 meter off of the ground. The researchers working to design, build and program these robots still have much work to do to get these bots to climb taller trees of various sizes and to navigate over branches and wires.”

Doesn’t look real practical as a robot but I love the look around routine, really looks alive.
Perhaps once they are done experimenting with the snake design as a vehicle they can simply attach it to the top of big dog or some other robot, or a NASA probe, since the flexible look around capability seems pretty usable and to be working right.
It might also be handy for armored fighting vehicles to have a more flexible way to look around.

yes, i think as a novelty it’s pretty freakin’ cool, but as a stand alone, not really sure what it could be used for. Guess the sky is the limit though. Would love to see more of this one once it has more funtionality.
