We have seen KUKA Robot Arms turned into DJ music machines and ice cream machines but this F1 Ferrari Simulator is something else! Paolo Robuffo Giordano and colleagues from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, Germany are the ones behind this cool idea.

“The CyberMotion Simulator is basically a full motion simulator adapted to a racing car game. Players (or subjects, the researchers prefer to call them) sit in a cabin on a robot arm some 2 meters off the ground and drive a Ferrari F2007 car around a projected track with force-feedback steering wheel and pedals. The aim is to make the experience as realistic as possible without having to buy a real F2007, and to test the simulator with an environment that requires sudden, massive acceleration.”

    Well the kuda is over kill, a 3 axis machine would be more then enough. Would need a smaller footprint too, that’d get rid of that pesky return to center thing they’ve got going on

    why is it overkill. the kuka can lift 500kg (1102lbs) of weight dynamic – if you think of a normal person, that’s 80kg-90kg (176lbs – 198lbs), the framework 90kg (198lbs), the seat 30kg (66lbs)() the electronics (monitor, peripherals like input devices, sensors, amplifiers…) 80kg (176lbs) it adds up to 280kg – 290kg (617 lbs- 640lbslbs), which is about 2/3 of the maximum. then you want to move a person, so the safetyfactor has to be S > 1.3. -> 500kg/290kg=1.7. that’s safe and you’ve got ~90kg in reserve, which is not that much.
    a normal 3 axis machine (i think you were talking about an non RRR solution) would never be able to simulate the full 6 dof you have in a real car (nevertheless i hope, that it doesn’t come to experience the full 6 dof 😀 )and the center-return is only needed for calibrating the home position and easy to solve with an defined path through the dextrus workspace and btw. if going in home-position i don’t want to sit up there! 😀

    That is why they have so many team members working on this system. While one is recovering in hospital the replacement will continue. 🙂
