Name the Thing Contest – 140

at 5:28 pm. Filed under Contests

The prize this week is one of our new IR Jammer kits that was just released this week, this will let you jam the infrared receiver on any infrared remote controlled item such as a TV or stereo. If you are looking to solder together your first project this would be a great project to start with since everything is through hole (no surface mount components). This contest will run for one week (July 17 – July 23, 2010) . Ending time is based on central standard time. To enter, identify the item pictured above and give an example of what can be done with it.

Please do not give the answer in the comments.

Send an email to contest @ hackedgadgets.com with “Name the Thing Contest” as the subject, and the message body consisting of:

  • The name of the item in the above picture
  • An example of what the item pictured above can be used for

The winner will be chosen at random from all of the correct entries.

Cool choice for a Name the Thing! I’m always interested to see how many people guess correctly on the few that I know.

  2. Teh Says:

Yeah – I think it would be a good idea to reveal the name of the “thing” and how many people got it correct after each week. I usually want to know whether I got it right.

  3. Mike Says:

Alan does post the results and count; he just did for the last 3 contests.

  4. sp00nix Says:

think this thing would jam 3D goggles?

  5. Teh Says:

Oh ok, he apparently just updates the old posts. (Those updates don’t show up in the RSS feed, and that’s why I didn’t know)

  6. London Says:

@sp00nix The name the thing object? Probably not. XD

  7. Alan Parekh Says:

    Hi sp00nix,

If they used IR at one of the standard 6 frequencies then it should. That would be a fun (cruel) trick to play. 😉

  8. Alan Parekh Says:

    Hey Teh,

Just like Mike mentioned the contest posts are updated after the contest is over (usually within a few weeks to indicate what the item was and who the winner was. I also leave a comment saying that the winner has been announced. The people who left a comment will get immediate notification when that comment is left if they checked off the notification box when submitting their comment.

    Thanks for participating!

  9. Kozz Says:

Though never having seen this object before, I had a feeling, especially after looking at the photo in greater detail… and even though my guess was correct, it took quite a bit of searching, and I finally found the exact picture used here, too.

  10. Ice Brodie Says:

It’d be cool if you guys would declare who won these and what the object was after the contest ends. I really wanna know what this is. XD

  11. Alan Parekh Says:

    Hi Ice,

    We do, see comment 8.

Have a look here http://hackedgadgets.com/category/contests/ and look at the italic text in each contest. We wouldn’t leave you hanging without ever telling you what it was. 🙂

  12. Ice Brodie Says:

    Thanks for the reply Alan,
I am apparently blind, sorry about that. 😛
    – Ice

  13. Alan Parekh Says:

It is a common question so there is something that I need to come up with that is a bit more obvious.

  14. Ice Brodie Says:

    Dear Alan,
Most other blogs I’ve seen that run contests do a followup post linked to the original with the winners. That’s what I was expecting when I first saw these.

To be honest, I don’t have a clue on this one, other ones I’ve submitted to, this one, no idea.

    – Ice

  15. Mclmw Says:

Easy one for me, but I’ve never seen this kind of setup before so I was just 95% sure. I’m pretty curious how many people got this one right.
