Youtube user vegmatic1966 has made lots of electronic experimentation videos. The two videos above explain a simple AM Transmitter that uses a 555 Timer and the video below shows off a AM Transmitter that uses a PICAXE microcontroller.

Adam Greig from Negative Acknowledge has developed a nice Nerf Sentry Gun, he used the NERF Vulcan which was the same gun I was thinking of using for my Nerf Gun project which is currently being finished but it was quite a bit more than the knock off that I ended up using. Via: Hack a Day “The gun itself is now running off a 3-cell lipo pack, which about doubles the rate of fire, and has three ammo belts chained together to give 74 rounds in one continuous burst of fire.”

The prize this week is a one year digital subscription to Make Magazine, this will give you lots of idea for your next project. This contest will run for one week (June 20 – July 2, 2010). Ending time is based on central standard time. To enter, identify the item pictured above and give an example of what can be done with it. If you need a closer look at the item to guess have a look here. Thanks to Pete Mills for providing images to guess! Please do not give the answer in the comments. Send an email to contest @ hackedgadgets.com with “Name the Thing Contest” as the subject, and the message body consisting of:
The winner will be chosen at random from all of the correct entries. ———————————–———- Added June 26, 2010 The item to guess was the Solfan module The winner is Adam E. (there were 38 entries, this was a hard one!!) ————————————–———- Here are some more pictures of the thing to guess Below is a picture of the prize. 1 Year of Make Magazine (online digital version) “The first magazine devoted entirely to DIY technology projects, MAKE Magazine unites, inspires and informs a growing community of resourceful people who undertake amazing projects in their backyards, basements, and garages.” |

Tod from ThingM has come up with a cool new product called LinkM. It will allow you to control your BlinkM devices with no dedicated microcontroller. Via: Electronics Lab “LinkM is a USB adapter that addresses two of the most frequently-requested BlinkM features:
Plug it in, plug in a BlinkM, fire up the BlinkM Multitrack Sequencer, and start programming BlinkMs. It requires no drivers (when used with most operating systems), additional software or hardware. LinkM is about the same size and shape as a thumb drive. BlinkMs, BlinkM MinMs and BlinkM MaxMs can be plugged directly into it and it offers a compact, inexpensive interface for situations that do not require a general-purpose prototyping board or where an enclosed programming and control device with no exposed wiring is needed.” |

The first 8 seconds of this short video looks like a nice little robot with 4 wheels and a raising and lowering center platform. After the 8 second mark this robot shows us what is cool with this robot! As it approaches the first raised step the platform is thrust upward to the top of its travel very quickly, the result is a jumping robot! The robotics department of the Chiba Institute of Technology in Japan has developed a number of great looking robots, unfortunately I don’t think they have an English site (if they do and I missed it please leave a comment). This mbed RFID Tweeter project really shows off the power of the mbed microcontroller platform. With a relativity small program this project is able to read RFID tags and communicate with Twitter to send messages under specific circumstances. The mbed is based on an ARM processor, you can find the full impressive datasheet here (PDF). Video after the jump “Hardware Components For this example, we use:

LANGUAGE WARNING. Things on Hacked Gadgets are usually G rated but there is a bit of swearing in the video so if this offends you please skip this article. This is a hilarious video, these guys rigged up a car airbag to be triggered remotely and stuck it under the center cushion of their couch. Poor guy who they got to sit directly on the airbag when it went off. I was thinking that the video was staged but I don’t think anyone would be stupid enough to do this on purpose with all of the airbag deaths that air bags have caused over the years. Not that airbags are bad since I believe that they do more good than harm but that is another debate. “NHTSA recorded 238 deaths due to airbags between 1990 and 2002, according to information about these deaths on their Web site,” said Meyer. They all occurred at very low speeds, with injuries that could not have been caused by anything else.” Turns out there are lots of idiots out there, have a look at more clowns below who thought it might be a good idea to play with an airbag until they fractured their spine! Idiot at the beach sits on airbag
Idiot at junk yard sits on airbag
Idiot on bike runs over airbag
Idiot on lawn chair has airbag explode under him
