PICkit 3 Programmer/Debugger Microchip Video

at 12:22 pm. Filed under Funny Hacks

Dave Jones from the EEVblog did a review of the PICkit 3 Programmer/Debugger. Watch the video above but to sum it up he was not impressed with the new version. The video below is a video that Microchip made in response to Dave’s video review. Lets just say that I am VERY impressed by Microchip putting together this great video poking fun at themselves and on such short notice. Well done Microchip!

Nice to see a company engaging the customer base and not sending a C&D. Also A+ for taking themselves to seriously.

I have a PICkit 2, and I love it. Haven’t had much of a reason to get a PICkit 3 yet,
Most of my circuit building is hobby level, something to pass the time, and I only use
    lower end PIC’s 16f’s and 18f’s

But I do have to say, I love microchip’s response and will continue to do business
with them for a long time. I am glad to see they are taking the customers needs into
consideration, especially on a product already on the market.

Well DID they “fire D. Head” and change the bad stuff mentioned in the video?

Companies that screw around with the people who design product lines should be very careful.

We simply calculate whether it costs more to retool than to migrate an existing product design to exclude a given vendor.

That $15 shipping charge on samples is just a nuisance - as it costs $120 of employee time to handle the billing.

    =P

    Hi Duh,

I didn’t realize that they were charging for shipping. We always got our samples real fast and free. It was great when you are tying to find the ideal chip from 3 or 4 that would work. That is sad since I like the PIC line and I think the AVR folks offer free samples…

    @ martinmunk
Yes, they are fixing some things, but not all. They are reintroducing the programmer software and making it open source (+ firmware). They are fixing the LEDs (they took that rather seriously, I was nit-picking!), they have already released the Programmer-2-go feature, they are working on the speed, but they are standing firm on the auto VDD option I think.

In any case it’s massively impressive that a $4BN corporation would care enough to listen and respond in such a way!

    Dave.
