The power of a modern cell phone is changing how many things are done today. For example I recently heard that the once CPU taxing program Myst was now available for the iPhone. I think I had to upgrade my video card to play that game years ago. Thanks to a Microsoft grant some software was developed to display data from a USB Ultrasound device. This technology allows for cheap portable medical diagnosis. See the full presentation here (PDF). "Futures Via: CellPhones.org |

So pleased someone has done this. From here on all sorts of things could happen.
Just imagine having an inbuilt ultrasonic transponder in your phone. It could allow you to see at night like a bat. Much longer range and lower energy requirements than a flashlight.
Though it will take a bit of practice to get good at recognising things.

Were can I find a list of cell phones that sell in the US with US Host mode built in
October 8th, 2009
There are none for sale in the US that I know of (hence, no list). There are a few being talked about (rumors) that are coming. The Toshiba TG01 being sold in Europe right now has it and phones with similar chipsets are rumored to be coming here from HTC and Acer. Don’t believe it until you see it, however.

Though not a phone the Nokia N810 tablet has host mode and Linux OS. The N900 phone is almost sure to have USB host capability.

Michael furthers my point; there are no currently available phones available in the US. And I’ve ready many “reviews” of the N900 that indicate the USB host functionality will not be enabled (most current phones have USB host support, but it’s not “turned on” in the OSes on those phones… and, no, it’s not easy to do via software and if the hardware – such as a power supply – are not there, even harder to make work).
