Making a device extremely simple is sometimes exactly what is needed. These days it seems that most manufacturers are packing every device with more and more featured and functions. To use these modern gadgets there is always a multitude of buttons, wheels and touchscreens. The learning curve is also so high that years after owning some equipment obscure features still pop-up. Bushnell has gone in the opposite direction with the Backtrack GPS Finder. This thing is super simple to use since all it’s doing is keeping track of a few programmable GPS locations and pointing to them so that you can walk back to it. This would be perfect when camping, you could program the campsite, washroom and the campsite office. Some sites have complex paths that make it easy to loose your bearings. That would not be a problem with this device. Via: Red Ferret |

I think one thing that gadget makers have forgotten over time is something called simplicity. Sometimes, people just don’t need to have every feature known to man put on one device (I’m still waiting for the GPS-enabled Bluetooth WiFi Toaster router). We forget that having one device being good at what it does is all we need sometimes.

These are handy for finding a parked car etc. but only remember waypoints and points to those, providing a straight line indication. In my experience, for larger and wilder “get home” problems you need something that remembers most of the path so you don’t wind up trying to walk in a straight line that doesn’t exist (or exists off a cliff in the dark). My current fave is the Garmin Foretrex 101 but there are a lot of simple/low-end GPS units that will do the job, many of which can be gotten at discount at about the same price as the Backtrack.

These are very simple to use. Yes it will get you to your car to nearest 5m (what more do you need?), but only if it can sense satellite signals (so it WONT work under ground or under heavy cover. It works reasonably well on hillsides and medium scrub, but I havent used it in a rainforst canopy.
It has great batterie conservation because its LCD and you only have to use it for a few seconds at a time (eg to mark or read your next direction/bearing to one of the (limited) 3 way points.
I suggest that when you want to use it for real (ie need it to be accurate for safely getting back to car/camp)I suggest you activate before hand and store so it knows what country/state/region you are. For example I live in Sydney but when I turned it on in say Hawaii, it took 2 minutes to sync the first time to work out it was not longer in Australia, then about 20-30sec after that for each point becuse it knew where it was afte that
This is important if you want to use it quickly (say you are run out of the car after spotting some pigs etc). Then after tramping around you can tets your self navigation skills by getting yourself back to the car and checking your estimnate with the Back Tracker
Agree with comments that it wont advise your track or allow you to follow your previous route, it is simply a distance / bearing device frojm wherever youo are, and yes you may be pointed over a cliff, so you need to use some judgement about the return trip.
The first time you open the battery compartment, its a bit of an intelligence test – unlock by pushing arrow to ‘dot’ then Tap the back onto your palm os something to “shock” the cover off. You’ll get the point after your first try.
Check you tube, there bound to be more useful tips, but really there isnt much to it, and the manual is just a page or two.

I recommend as a supplement to hunters who need to quickly take a point and run off after that, safe that they have some backup regarding finding your way back quickly.
