Electric Skateboard and Unicycle

at 10:52 am. Filed under Complex Hacks, Electronic Hacks, Insane Equipment

Rodger Cleye is into building electric vehicles. So far he has built an Electric Skateboard and a Electric Unicycle. I like the fact that there are safety features built into both of them, safety seems to be the first thing that is lacking in DIY projects. Not sure I could ever get the unicycle under control but I think the skateboard would be possible…

"The UNIQUECYCLE is an upgraded GEN2 unicycle featured below. It has been boosted to a 60V system yielding in excess of 1000W. The NiMh battery system has been replaced by SLA technology. The SLA is lower cost, easier to recharge and handles regeneration and peak current demands effectively. The higher voltage results in higher top-end speed. Speed overhead is critical for safety in order to maintain balance during road disturbances at high speed."

[…] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC9cdIUiOqU The design is cool, the Ni-Mh batteries are concealed in the forks and it looks like a standard unicycle, except for the fact that it doesn’t have pedals and is understandably a little more beefy, it weighs in at about 50 lbs. While this is unlikely to achieve mass appeal, it is a very cool idea. I am not sure what the top speed on this one is, but the UNIQUECYCLE has a power system which yields more than 1000W. This will get you a higher top speed than the first generation version of the model. Higher speed is, oddly enough, a safety consideration as, “speed overhead is critical for safety in order to maintain balance during road disturbances at high speed.” [Electric Unicycle via Hacked Gadgets] […]

That unicycle has quite a bit of power. I like unique projects like this. I have never seen or heard of an electric unicycle before.
