Name the Thing Contest - 6

at 12:15 am. Filed under Contests

Congratulation to Peter D. who was the winner last week.

The first prize this week is a 2.5″ PATA hard disk enclosure that allows you to take your data on the road. Just slide in a drive (not included) and plug into your USB port. I use thumb drives a lot but quite often I am left using FTP to transfer files, this would certainly solve that problem.

A mini TV remote control will also be given away however not at random, the remote will be given to the first correct answer to the question. This is the same type of remote that was used in the Atari 2600 Joystick TV Remote hack.

This contest will run for this weekend only (June 2 - 3, 2007) . Ending time is based on central standard time. To enter, identify the item pictured above and give an example of what can be done with it. Please do not give the answer in the comments.

Send an email to contest @ hackedgadgets.com with “Name the Thing Contest” as the subject consisting of:
* The name of the item in the above picture
* An example of what the item pictured above can be used for

The winner of the hard drive enclosure will be chosen at random from all the correct entries, the winner of the mini remote will be the first person to respond with the correct answer.

The device is a Crystal Oscillator. These oscillators are used whenever a very stable oscillation frequency is needed.

The winner of the Hard Drive Enclosure is Troy D.
The winner of the Mini Remote Control is Chris R.
(There were 104 entries for this contest)

Thanks to all who entered.

Winners have been announced (added to the contest post). Thanks to everyone who entered.

  7. Richard Kelsch Says:

The winning answer to the question is WRONG!!!

The device is a tuned quartz crystal, not an oscillator. A quartz crystal is used in oscillator circuits but is not an oscillator as shown. Even the link to Wikipedia demonstrates this fact of it being a part of a circuit for an oscillator and not the oscillator itself.

It’s like calling a gas tank a “car”.

    Hi Richard Kelsch,

Thanks for the clarification, I was very lenient with the answers so it wouldn’t have changed the outcome.
