“Top burning alcohol stoves are generally dependable and easy to operate, just light and wait for your food or water to heat up. They also produce a circular array of individual flames similar to a gas range. The stove shown above is made of two 12oz pop can bottoms. Twenty-four jets were drilled around the outer base of the circular ridge on top of the stove, with a #71 drill (about needle size). The bottom section of stove is 20mm tall. The top piece is about 30mm tall and the inner cylinder is 40mm wide.
Simmering is fairly easy to do and you have many options, such as placing a cutout 12oz pop can bottom with a hole cut in it (or something similar - like a piece of foil) on top of the stove.”

There are almost an infinite number of changes you can do to this design. Look up ‘penny stove’ on google or wikipedia.
the ‘open top’ version seems to burn a little hotter… most likely because it burns a lot more fuel.
I don’t try and boil water on these things–they take so long to get any amount of water up to a boil. I basically just use them to heatup stuff like an egg. They fry egg’s great.

This is fantastic. After going through this Alcohol Stove site (zenstoves.net) - I am amazed that there are so many ways to build stoves.
The images are amazing. Do these things really work?

Homemade alcohol stoves are great. As for boiling 16oz water in 4.5 minutes on .5 alcohol is hard to beat. No they can not boil as fast as stoves with pressurize fuel tanks. Homemade stoves produce their own pressure. Homemade are light,cheap,and durable.No o rings to blow. I tested homemade aganist factory alcohol burner. that produce their pressure and can beat them.
