There may come a time when you need to destroy the data on an old hard drive. If you don’t want to make something cool out of it then here are some fun video hard drive destruction suggestions.
Disclaimer: Many hard drives were harmed in the making of these videos
Wow I thought all of the hard drives used metal platters! Number 6 proves that you have to be careful when trashing some of those drives. I wonder what would happen of that drive was accidentally dropped, the platters would probably shatter into a million pieces! Not exactly what I would call a robust recording media.
This destruction method is stupid =) You should use Darik’s Boot and Nuke (”DBAN”) @ http://dban.sourceforge.net/ and use the most powerful wiping method available. Then do this, hard drive killing. You may not know but even when you break the hard drive plate. There is still a chanse your hard drive data can be recovered by using lasers =)
I have a small business PC consulting company in Las Vegas, NV and identity theft is a major concern for my clients as well. I have a process I use for them that GUARANTEES complete and total desturction of the data on a disposed of hard drive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zR6i2CholDQ
[...] Erasel Methods such de-magnetizing and deguassing are dubious at best. And other methods such as burning, submersing in water and shooting (with a gun of course,) are still recoverable by professionals. [...]
