Want to build a stun gun? You would be surprised how simple the electronic circuit is. The basic concept is to take a small voltage source and convert this into a much higher voltage. This is done by pulsing a high gain transformer and storing the high voltage in a capacitor. Click on the schematic below for a detailed look at a nice simple design from Electronics Lab.
How Stuff Works has a nice article that explains why stun guns work so well.
Here are some other stun gun designs that are quite interesting. Remember that stun guns are not legal everywhere…

a stungun is not a tazer, a tazer ’shoots’, and with a stungun you must touch a ‘enemy’ with it.
the ‘bullet’ of a tazer is connected with something like a iron thread, so you can shoot the bullet out of your tazer while connected with with it.

For those who do not feel like making a stun gun, just buy one. They are cheap and come in many variations - take a look here for Stun Guns and Pepper Spray. http://www.StingerDefense.com
